Don't Let Your New Dentures Turn Into A Pain In The Mouth: 5 Ways To Adjust To Life With Dentures

If you're wearing dentures for the first time, you might be having a hard time getting used to them. It's natural to need a bit of time to adjust to them. While you're adjusting to your new dentures, here are some simple things you can do to make the process more comfortable.

Start With Soft Foods

It's going to take some time for your gums to get used to the foreign objects resting on them. Chewing may cause your dentures to rub on your gums, which can lead to sores. To reduce the chances of developing sores, limit yourself to soft foods for the first few days. Once you're used to the dentures, you can start eating solid foods again.

Rinse With Salt Water

Try to rinse your mouth with salt water at least twice a day. The salt water will help get rid of germs and bacteria in your mouth. It will also help eliminate any small sores that you develop. You should rinse in the morning when you wake up and at night before you go to bed.

Use Denture Adhesive

While you're getting used to your dentures, it's a good idea to use denture adhesive, especially on the lower plate. The upper plate will form a natural seal with the roof of your mouth; however, your lower plate will only rest on your lower jaw. The adhesive will help hold the plate in place so that it doesn't slip out of place.

Hold Your Tongue

In addition to the adhesive, you'll need to learn how to hold your tongue properly. Your tongue can actually hold your lower plate in place so that it doesn't slip and cause sores. Place your tongue in the back of the denture, right at the teeth. With practice, your tongue will naturally rest on your denture to keep it from slipping.

Go In For Adjustments

Your dentures were made according to the wax impressions that your dentist made. There may be a few places that don't fit properly. Those spots may become uncomfortable. It's important that you see your dentist for adjustments to ensure that your dentures fit properly. Whenever your dentures stop fitting properly, you should return for a new adjustment through a company like The Denture Studio. This will keep your dentures comfortable to wear and prevent sores from developing.

Now that you have your dentures, you're going to need to adjust to them. Use these simple methods to help you get used to them. If you continue to have difficulties with your dentures, or you develop painful sores, you should contact your dentist as soon as possible.
